I read about “The Music Box” in this Gambit article last week. In hopes of checking it out before it was dismantled, MG and I bopped over to the bywater in search of this hidden treasure. Unfortunately, we showed up a weekend too late. The Music Box officially closed its gates Father’s Day weekend. We did, however, get to peep through the holes in the fence. From what we could see this shantytown of musical structures looks like so much fun to explore. A musical playground and science lab for sounds.

The good news is there are plans in the works to build a musical house called Dithyrambalina, expanding on The Music Box experience. In the past Andrew W.K. and New Orleans’ own Mannie Fresh have participated. Check out some of the experimental rhythm and sounds in this video.
