A Few Pointers

I came across this today on Pinterest and thought I would share. I can’t count the number of times I walk into a store take one look at the mannequin and say, “Yes! I am buying the whole look. The only thing that outfit is missing is me wearing it.”

The funky way the mannequin tied her scarf, or the way she layered three button downs and a jacket without looking like she is suffocating is when I start to become envious of her great taste and style. After putting capitalism to work, I am back home in front of the mirror trying to figure out what went wrong between the store and home. The lack of an in-store stylist, apparently.

Marina Dobreva, a former J.Crew stylist, gives some helpful tips for upping the style quotient. I will be making particularly good use out of her sleeve roll tip. Mannequin, schmannequin.

plaid shirt (old) Forever 21, black skinny jeans (old) Zara, Olympiaa wedges Steve Madden

Thanksgiving brought wonderful news all around and was a sweet reminder of everything I have to be thankful for.  With A in London and Dad in Shanghai, the rest of us devoured Grandma’s cooking. It’s so good, I could just cry. B and I played around our grandparents property, took the paddle boat for a spin around the pond (there’s a video, but I have to get B’s approval first), and took photographs of all the pretty mountain foliage.

B did such a great job behind the camera, MG might need to find a new hobby. Just kidding, NOLAdressed is our joint venture. And by “joint venture” I mean “Here, take the camera and in five seconds I am going to turn and look at you and laugh/smile/strike random fashion blogger pose. Your job is to make it look like you just happened to snap a candid, and then I will post it on my blog.”

Spotted at Blues Festival

Forever 21 Sweater and Shorts, Charming Charlie Necklace

If you were to open my closet, the one thing you would not find  a lot of is animal print. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not opposed to animal print. I just do not find many pieces that strike me. I have seen others (sisters-by blood and soul-included) who have stumbled upon great finds, but I myself often pick up a blouse, run my fingers across the fabric, and ultimately put it back for something else that catches my eye.

I could not resist when I spotted these shorts at Forever 21 because they reminded me of these amazing leopard Red Valentino pants.  In an effort to save a penny I’m trying to show restraint. So instead of Valentino, I opted for the look for less. The weather for the Magazine Street Blues Festival was beautiful so it was a good opportunity to get use out of my shorts before the cold weather rears its ugly head.

Who Dat Girl

The best shopping is free 99, and ma mere has a closet full of deals. Last visit home, she was out of town so I had no one to monitor my shopping experience. Just as I was opening the antique chest to look for a few silk scarves, my phone rang. (Mom) scrolling across the screen. “Hey, what’s up?” “Before you even start, get out and close the door.” Caught. From Texas no less.

The Saints game against the Falcons required the Hail Mary of jackets. Enter from stage left this gem. Once belonging to mom, I found it hanging in one of her overflow closets for fashionable gems of times past. Discovering Hail Mary was like discovering someone had been sitting on a goldmine but foolishly had no clue.

Always on a mission to set herself apart from the pack, the Buckhead Betty top dog pecking order, and three girls to raise, mom ordered all her clothes from catalogs like I. Magnin, Bloomingdales, and J. Peterman’s (Pre-internet shopping and HSN). All the while, she gravitated towards items she knew the other ladies would not dare wear unless their friends did. Funny how quickly styles changed and Suburbans started popping up everywhere in the carpool line 😉

Gleason Gras

Trombone Shorty

A few shots from Gleason Gras last Sunday. Champion’s Square may have been wet, but a little rain never hurt anyone. In fact, all that talkin’ on the tin roof of the Superdome probably solidified Monday’s Saints win against the Eagles. Now, it’s time to gear up for our game against the Dirty Birds. I’m feeling a reprise of my gold sequin jacket…Who dat!!

[Sidebar: MG just walked in the door and dropped an envelope in my hand…two tickets to Sunday’s SAINTS GAME!! Who Dat, Indeed!!!]

Confession. I like fried food. Lots of it. Those that know me well, know I can throwdown at the dinner table. Thankfully, NOLA has plenty of offerings of the fried variety to satiate my cravings. My only dilemma is the guilt I feel for not pumping my body with healthier options.

I heard a lot about Superfood Bar and passed it on a number of occasions. I am so glad I decided to see what the fuss was about. Now I have a place of refuge (at 4113 Magazine Street) when I fall short of healthy decision making.  « Read the rest of this entry »
